Hitachi 55 plamsa- will a blu-ray dvd work with the unit?

I just bought a Hitichi 55 HDS69 plasma tv. I am intereseted in a ps3 w/ blu-ray dvd player. My question is will 1080p play on this unit. I understand that since this unit only supports 1080i, I will not achive the optimal quaility, but when I plug in a blu-ray will i see the movie, if so what quaility should I expect?
