How to get a current value of a home?

Simply I use to own a house a few states over. I was thinking about trying to buy it back from the current owner. Without having the house appraised...is there a county record or something similar I could look at to see a approx value as I am not sure what the market has done there. I wanted a Idea before I called the current owner. Thanks
