Aren't the Midwest states just the inland eastern states?

well in terms of splitting the country, down the middle, most of the midwestern states are on the eastern half of the country. so yes you might say that. the reason it's called that is because back in the day when civilization was only out east, anything farther west than Pennsylvania was "the west". of course that is no longer true.
