Why is there a lint drawer in my new washing machine?

I recently moved in to an apartment and they already have a washer/dryer installed. I'm just curious what the lint drawer in the washer does exactly? I've never seen one before and just want to know. What does it do, why is there one in this washer and in the dryer. Thnx
